I am...
an ethnomusicologist who specializes in Indonesian music and culture
Assistant Professor of Music at Bucknell University
President of Arts Indonesia - Gamelan Dharma Swara
recipient of Fulbright-Hays and FLAS fellowships

My scholarly research focuses on the relationship between performance and identity in contemporary Indonesia, especially in Bali. I’m particularly interested in questions relating to ethnicity, modernity, and traditional performance.

My teaching interests range from thematic courses in music and culture to introductory classes and performing ensembles. At Bucknell, I also teach writing seminars and interdisciplinary courses.

My performance background is extensive. I trained for many years as a concert flutist, with a particular interest in contemporary music. My studies of Balinese gamelan began during my first year as an undergraduate at the College of the Holy Cross. Today, I am President of the New York City-based Gamelan Dharma Swara and direct the Bucknell Gamelan Ensemble.

My Ph.D. in Musicology is from Cornell University (2007), where I was awarded the Donald Grout Memorial Prize for my doctoral dissertation "The 'Chinese' in Contemporary Balinese Performing Arts: Stories, Objects, and Representations." I also performed with and directed the Cornell Gamelan Ensemble during my time as a graduate student.
